🎓 Early Academic Pursuits

Prof. Jianwu Dang embarked on his academic journey with a strong foundation in computer science, earning both his bachelor’s (1982) and master’s (1984) degrees from Tsinghua University. His academic curiosity led him to pursue a Ph.D. at Shizuoka University, Japan (1992), where he delved into speech science and computational modeling.

💼 Professional Endeavors

His career began as a lecturer at Tianjin University (1984-1988) before moving to Japan, where he became a senior researcher at ATR Human Information and Communication Laboratories (1992-2001). During this period, he also worked as a visiting scholar at the University of Waterloo, Canada (1998-1999). Later, he held prominent positions such as Professor and Director of the Intelligent Information Processing Laboratory at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (2001-2022) and First-Class Research Scientist at the Institute for Speech Communication, Grenoble, French Academy of Sciences (2002-2003).

  • Computational modeling of pronunciation mechanisms at the physiological level.

Prof. Dang has made significant contributions to global speech science research, returning to China to serve as Dean of the School of Computer Science, Tianjin University (2009-2016) and later as an adjunct professor (2009-2023). He also played a pivotal role as the first Director of the CCF Speech Dialogue and Hearing Committee, influencing national and international advancements in human-computer interaction and speech processing.

With an impressive academic record, Prof. Dang has authored over 120 journal articles in leading international journals such as JASA, IEEE Transactions, Speech Communication, and Neuroscience. He has also contributed to over 500 conference papers, shaping research in speech technology, machine learning, and auditory neuroscience.
